Business Skills ≠ Sales Skills

I can't remember which nephew it was, Delano or Anthony, that kept bugging his mom about something. Jenny told him, "it's not going to do any good to keep asking me," at which point I said, "it's good business skills," which launched a conversation about how pushy sales people will only make one sale, not many. I just kept my mouth shut, since I'm the youngest, and no one agreed with me or saw my point.

My point was, however, not that you should pester people to make sales. But if you are a manager, or running a business, and your employees, or those you have contracts with, are not fulfilling their duties, or their end of the contract, it is up to you to make sure they do. If you want something, you need to ask for it. If you don't get it, ask for it again.

When I said good business skills, I didn't mean good sales skills. I meant good employee management, and business relations skills. I'm not saying it's not the best, but I don't think it's a completely invaluable skill either, to nag. My boss and supervisor regularly ask if I've completed tasks that I'm working on. I think they should. They need to know where I'm at so they can plan.

Getting what you want is not always about getting someone else to do something they don't want. Hopefully, you can find someone who wants to do what you want. Or at least find someone who wants to help you the most relative to their other wants (has a comparative advantage in terms of wanting to help you).

So, yeah, maybe being pushy isn't the best sales tactic, but I think good business people are notoriously pushy. Focus, and determination are important if you want to achieve your goals, and your dreams. I love people, and I don't want them to feel under attack, but the other side of the coin is, you can just keep saying no, and pushy people help those being pushed to set clear boundaries, and rules of engagement.

Anyways, I'm bored with myself, so if you made it this far, I'm sorry. I need to edit things more. Maybe I need an editor. I should start by editing myself. Hm.

Thanks all. Goodbye.
